Clean north Atlantic waves swell up in the evenings though there is a strong backwash. High tides can be a bit chaotic for surfers, and on a rough day the waves lack direction. You may struggle to get back in or find yourself heading for the rocks towards the north. Warning signs are posted at the gate that leads to the beach, only for really good swimmers I'd guess, but the beach is as stunning as any I've ever seen, and often desolate. Get there by taking the A847 to just before Bruichladdich on the island's west side. As you approach Bruichladdich watch out for the B8108 (Kilchoman Road). You can follow this road till it turns to a dirt track which leads to Machir Bay (beautiful in itself) or watch out for a right turn past Loch Gorm which leads you up to Saligo. Look out for a gate just past the cowcatcher. Over the gate, follow the path and bear west towards the sound of the surf.
