We headed to the Mull of Galloway on a big North Channel Swell to find a few cars with boards strapped on top, folk smiling like monkeys and half a foot of slop. Bonkers. But the legend lives on and I have heard it can be good. I swear I saw barrels at Balantrae..........
There are some nice beaches here which provide good swells on a north westerly and the occassional southerly and at the best of times give a 3-5ft wave. There are 3 beaches which are about 10 miles apart. Port Logan bay, being the most Southern, Killintringhan in the middle and then the best one of all which faces N.W and picks up just about every swell is called Meikle Larbbrax.
Very unpridictable usualy windswell which can change in 5 mins.Rarely gets above 2ft only seen it on a north westerly once which was very fickle not much power at all.And yes the road to labrax is a killer you need a land rover a tractor or a tank to get there.
Checked Killantringhan today 2ft swell by the time I had gone for my board and wettie which took 15 mins the swell had dropped. Only seen it work once of a groundswell. Labrax does kill your suspension and its a long trek.
Don't waste your petrol money unless you enjoy driving in the Scottish countryside. I went to Meikle Larbrax during a large north westerly swell only to see an inch of water breaking. Plus the drive down to the beach will destroy your suspension.
Surfed larbrax today with a 2-3ft north westerly swell, good clean conditions and has been for a few weeks. Great right's off the reef break at the point. Don't let Mark from Glasgow put you off. after all the only place to get hammered there is the local pub.
Stef, how do you access larbrax? I was searching all day to find it and got no joy on a big swell. Maybe it was me but I just couldn't find how to get to the sea without trekking through farmland.
