A wicked wave to surf when the swell turns on and it can produce some big barrels. But watch out for the breakwater because if that doesn’t get you the sewage will!
This gets by far the biggest swell in Wales, if not UK! it gets huge at times (15ft) in fact the waves are almost as big as the giant turds waiting to get you in the line up!
Every time I've been there with some sort of low pressure around it pumps in some impresssive swell they even tube at times! Definately a 5/5 which would floor 'gennith and Rest bay any day of the year(especially at high tide).
This beach is so sweet I never thought about surfing it before but I did and know I can't get enough of it. A definate 5/5 when the swell is small or huge. When it works it's a good all around wave and if you catch it right it will beat any wave. Need i say more?
The water quality has greatly improved due to the new sewage treatment works, and the industrial works do not pump out so much s##t these days. A great wave when its on, an A frame peak with a long left wall which can barrel on take off and can hold swells up to 10ft, then it does close out, with the odd rideable wave.
Aberavon is a turd burgulars paradise which has been absolutely destrpyed due to the construction of a massive breakwater! This spot does get decent hollowish waves in winter which can be gnarly, but then there are better places to go like margam or rest! Unless your a local or you somehow can't go anywhere else, or enjoy round brown fish I advise you to go elsewhere. Southerndown is the best bet and low-mid on the push!
On its day (which is about 3 times a year in the height of winter) this wave can be the best in Wales, it doesn't get as much swell as 'gennith or Rest Bay or Southerdown for that matter, so to get it awesome you've gotta do your homework with the winds and weather charts! It's usually a foot or two less here than Rest Bay but on its day can hold a peak on the sandbar up to double overhead (hollow too). Do exit with caution as the backwash can cause difficulties on a big tide!
What can I say... it does get good on the right conditions but for most of the year it's pretty average due to the new breakwater. In response to the Aberdare boys - you must be the ones sitting way off the peak!!!!
